Gundrilling

Precision gundrilling expertise and technology allows us to drill up to 600 times the diameter.

Gundrilling is the process of deep hole drilling, first used in the making of gun barrels more than 100 years ago.

Drilling a hole deeper than 4 to 5 times its diameter is considered deep hole drilling. Dearborn has built our business and reputation dating back to 1947 on our precision gundrilling expertise and technology. Our ability to deep hole drill ferrous and non-ferrous specialized metals and alloys is unprecedented. In fact, we can drill ultra-deep holes, with a potential depth-to-diameter ratio of 600:1 possible depending on material and hole size requirements. This is an example of the unrivaled precision that Dearborn consistently provides to our clients.

Our advanced gundrilling capabilities allow us to:

  • Control hole drift better than industry standard of .001 per inch from entrance
  • Drill .073” diameter to 2.50” diameter and up to 32’ deep
  • Produce a concentric drilled part that has a wall variation of less than .002” without having to turn the outside diameter (OD) to the inside diameter (ID), up to 32’ long
  • Create off-center holes, angled holes and blind holes, depending on the specific need
  • Drill difficult materials, such as Inconel®, titanium, Hastelloy®, tungsten, heat treated stainless steel, beryllium, molybdenum, aluminum, brass, plastics and composites, copper, etc.
  • Utilize innovative Borecentric® drilling techniques to minimize input material size
